for...      FINDING CALM AGAIN

Some people describe their anxiety as an all-invasive feeling of nervousness that never rarely leaves them. They constantly look over the shoulder and feel unsafe.  Others report excessive worrying, usually about a future event, or repetitive feelings of guilt about a past event. Sometimes it is a combination of all these things – a constant sense of unease because something bad happened in the past and there is a constant fear that it may happen again.

These are common forms of generalised anxiety, although of course, anxiety can be very specific. If you have ever been faced with giving a speech at a wedding and struck with disabling nerves, you will know what I mean. There is no doubt what the trigger for the anxiety is!

This kind of situation-specific fear, can be relate to all sorts of things. Driving test, job interview, exam nerves, a sudden loss of the power of speech when trying to ask someone on a date. All these things can create anxiety and in some cases may be bordering on phobia.

  • Think of CONFIDENCE and ANXIETY as two opposing forces.

  •  Often LOW Confidence will manifest itself as mild anxiety, and visa versa.

  • Treating anxiety will almost always produce an air of quiet relaxed confidence.

WHAT IS HAPPENING?

The first thing to understand is that you are not broken. Fear is a perfectly natural biological response. In the right circumstances, it could save your life. There is a part of the brain at work, that operates below the level of thought, scanning the environment for danger. When danger is detected, it puts you on high alert. You have probably heard of this as the ‘flight or fight response’. Your brain has learned what constitutes ‘danger’ through a lifetime of experience; And sometimes, the threshold that it applies becomes out of true, or oversensitive, causing an inappropriate behavioural response.
